21 U.S. Destinations to Visit in 2021: Flagstaff, Arizona

Jan 27, 2021 | West, General Travel

The ideal location to experience the ponderosa pine forests and majestic peaks of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff is a four-season destination with easy access to national park sites and outdoor recreation. Route 66 passes directly through the historic downtown railroad district, so make a stop at the Santa Fe Passenger Depot, now a visitor center staffed with knowledgeable locals. To continue the historic theme, check into the Hotel Monte Vista or the Weatherford Hotel, both have old-world charm and modern amenities. The hotels are centrally located among the 1900’s era buildings that are now home to restaurants, art galleries, and local stores.

Flagstaff has the perfect balance of indoor and outdoor activities. The Flagstaff Urban Trail System includes over 50 miles of trails and bike lanes connecting forests and open spaces with the commercial areas within the vibrant neighborhoods. The Flagstaff-Grand Canyon Ale Trail is another way to experience the city, with stops at nine award-winning breweries. The area receives close to 100 inches of snow during the winter months, encouraging ski enthusiasts to visit the nearby slopes at Arizona Snowbowl and trails at the Arizona Nordic Village.

The city is more than a drive-through destination as you make your way to the Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater, or the Petrified Forest National Park. Spend a few days and tour the impressive Riordan Mansion (designed by the same architect as the Grand Canyon’s El Tovar), take a slow drive through Bearizona Wildlife Park, and don’t miss the chance to stargaze at the Lowell Observatory.
