21 U.S. Destinations to Visit in 2021: New York City

The city that never sleeps has been in a slumber for almost a year, but we expect the largest city in the United States to be one of the most-visited destinations in the near future once travel is safe and back in fashion. Book a long weekend at one of the luxury hotels and wander back to your favorite spots. If timed entry is still a thing at the museums, embrace it— you’ll see much more than in years past with fewer crowds. The restaurant scene will undoubtedly be different; however, there’s nothing like eating outside on a pleasant afternoon or evening, and there will be many more opportunities for dining al fresco. Manhattan has always been a walking city unless you’re a local with a good grasp of the subway system. The push towards more pedestrian-only streets and bike lanes will make New York feel a lot more like European cities with significantly less vehicular traffic.
Like all of the large cities across America, there’s no one-size-fits-all itinerary. Here are three memorable options for your next trip to the Big Apple:
A Night at the Theater
“So, I went to New York City this weekend. Oh, did you see a show?” Broadway and New York City are tied at the hip, and for that reason, once they are given the green light to reopen, expect the performances to be over the top and theaters to quickly reach capacity again. Settle into the theater district with a room at The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection and a pre-show dinner at Gallagher’s Steakhouse. How can you go wrong with a hotel that opened in 1902 and was frequented by theatrical notables, including the members of the Algonquin Round Table, and a restaurant that opened in 1927 as a speakeasy and later became Broadway’s first steakhouse? For those of you that keep the playbooks and know every song, after the show head to Brandy’s Piano Bar on the Upper East Side or Marie’s Crisis Cafe in the West Village for an experience that you’ll never forget.
A Day in Central Park
On a beautiful day, there’s nothing like a trip to Central Park. Whether it’s your first trip or a regular activity, there are surprises around every corner and something for everyone to see and do. One of the best ways to explore the 843-acre park is on a bicycle, and we recommend renting one from the trusted Central Park Bike Rentals. Casually ride through the park, stopping at the various points of interest. The Central Park Zoo is a great stop for an hour or two, followed by lunch at Lakeside Restaurant at the BoatHouse. Take the opportunity to rent a rowboat and enjoy the sights and sounds of the park while navigating under the bridges and across the shallow pond. Stop at the Bethesda Fountain before leaving the park, one of the best picture spots in the city.
Exploring the Neighborhoods
It’s time to find your favorite new coffee shop, restaurant, or boutique store while exploring the trendy neighborhoods. We suggest heading towards Chelsea and exploring the shops and cafés in Chelsea Market before walking further south towards Greenwich Village, Noho “North of Houston”, and Soho “South of Houston”. Washington Square Park is a fun place to people watch and rest your feet before finding the perfect outdoor bar or restaurant. The vast majority of the stores have remained open and are ready to assist you with a little something to remember your trip to NYC.
