A Day in Lewisburg, WV

Jun 4, 2019 | Blog, South, Small Town Spotlight

Lewisburg is a charming small town nestled in the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia. We think it’s a truly cool destination. Lewisburg was founded in 1782 and is full of historic sites, unique shops, and great restaurants.

Downtown Lewisburg

To get started, pick up a town guide at the Visitors Center. We suggest a stop at Carnegie Hall. The historic theatre hosts live performances and has an art gallery that is open 10 am to 4 pm. It is one of only four Carnegie Halls in the world. The structure was built in 1902 with a contribution from Andrew Carnegie, the steel tycoon. Afterwards, head to the Old Stone Church in downtown Lewisburg. This beautiful church was built in 1796 and includes a Civil War cemetery.

Downtown Lewisburg

As you walk through downtown, there are plenty of specialty stores to check out. Harmony Ridge Gallery is full of local art, gifts and jewelry. At WV Fine Artisans more than 30 local and regional artists display their work.

Food & Drink

We suggest eating at the French Goat, a casual French-style bistro located in the heart of historic Lewisburg. Their inventive menu serves French classics with a twist.

For another great option, try the Livery Tavern, an 1800’s inspired tavern with a rustic feel and farm-to-table dishes.

To get some more local flavor, visit Hawk Knob’s Appalachian Hard Cider & Mead just outside of town. You can take a tour of the facility and try four kinds of hard cider and seasonal mead in their tasting room.

Nearby Activities

To really enjoy the Greenbrier Valley area, take a drive for some local adventure. Just 9 miles from Lewisburg, Organ Cave is a National Historic and Natural Landmark. Take a tour of the underground rock formations and see the site of the first Prehistoric three-toed sloth discovered in the late 1700s.

Another unique tour in the area is the Cold War Bunker at the Greenbrier Resort. Once a top-secret government relocation facility for Congress, The Bunker is now open for tours to provide an in-depth look behind the hidden doors! After the tour, take some time to explore the gorgeous resort and its grounds.
