We can’t think of a better place to highlight on National Hot Air Balloon Day than the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albuquerque is home to the International Balloon Fiesta, the premier international ballooning event held every October. It has been held there for almost 50 years because of the perfect climate and a phenomena known as the ”Albuquerque Box,” a combination of weather and geography that allows the balloonists to have greater control over their flight. Because of the fiesta and history of the area, there is also a Balloon Museum in Albuquerque that explores the history, science, and sport of ballooning.

48th Fiesta October 5-13, 2019
The International Balloon Fiesta is a 9-day extravaganza that includes “mass ascensions” at dawn, evening Balloon Glows, fireworks displays, and even a special shape “rodeo.” There are also competition events that test the balloon pilots’ skills.
Getting There
More than 800,000 guests attended last year’s festival, so be prepared for crowds. The grounds are the size of 56 football fields, so there is plenty of space, but getting in and out can be tricky. Parking passes can be purchased online, per day. If you bring your bicycle, there is free bike parking through a bike valet. There is also a shuttle park & ride service from four remote locations, but just plan to arrive early so you don’t miss your event. If you have an RV, the fiesta gladly welcomes them at the Balloon Fiesta Park RV Section.

Things to Do
Besides viewing the hundreds of colorful balloons, there is plenty to do during the fiesta. The most bucket list-worthy is taking a balloon ride of your own, exclusively provided by the Rainbow Ryders. There is a Balloon Discovery Center with hands-on activities for all ages. Over 30 food concession vendors serve everything from New Mexican breakfast burritos to funnel cakes. And there are dozens of merchandise vendors that sell local gifts, crafts, and official Balloon Fiesta merchandise.

Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum
Open year-round, the Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum is situated just outside the grounds used for the Fiesta. Even if you can’t make it in October, the museum is a great place to learn about hot air balloons. It is filled with balloons of all shapes and sizes with exhibits that explain how they fly and how they have played an important part in history. The museum is named for two Albuquerque natives who piloted the first balloon to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can view several permanent and temporary exhibits, as well as 4-D theater where they can watch and feel a simulated flight experience.
