Beautiful Natural Landmarks: Chimney Rock National Historic Site

May 26, 2021 | Midwest, General Travel

The famous Chimney Rock, a fixture of the Nebraska grasslands, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the American West. The narrow spire stretches 325 feet above the plains, and was once a beacon for pioneers headed to California, Oregon, and Utah. Today, adventurers driving along U.S. Route 26 and Nebraska Highway 92 can learn more about this unique geological formation at the Chimney Rock Visitor Center, located in Bayard, Nebraska, and operated by History Nebraska with support from the National Park Service.

The visitor center contains museum exhibits and media presentations showcasing the history of the Native Americans, fur traders and travelers following the Overland Trails. The small retail shop sells unique merchandise and gifts including fun magnets and postcards to memorialize your trip along the trail.

Travel Tip: The best time to photograph the natural landmark is in the morning with the rising sun lighting up the spire from the east. To get a closer vantage point, hike the short one mile down-and-back trail toward the monument. This is a great time to reflect on the difficulties and challenges the pioneer families experienced along the way and their uncertain futures.
