What’s New at the Zoo: Brookfield Zoo is Open!

Aug 10, 2020 | Midwest, Nature & Wildlife

Brookfield Zoo, located in the suburbs of Chicago, has been a leader in animal habitat design and animal care for almost 100 years. The 200+ acre AZA-accredited zoological park houses over 2,000 animals across 450 diverse species. The zoo is managed by the Chicago Zoological Society, a leader in wildlife conservation with partnerships far beyond Brookfield Zoo. The staff has done a tremendous job balancing family fun with informative exhibits and naturalistic animal habitats.

Visitors to the zoo this summer will experience the new DINOS EVERYWHERE! exhibit. As you navigate to your favorite animal habitats, you will find more than 40 life-size animatronic dinosaurs along the way. The exhibit was created by Jurassic Park advisor Don Lessum and is arguably the best presentation of dinosaurs on this scale. Don’t miss Argentinosaurus, this massive dinosaur measures more than 110 feet in length and stands three-stories tall. See how many of the dinosaurs you can check-off!!

While exploring the Big Cats area, try to catch a glimpse of Sasha, an Amur Leopard that was born earlier this year and is now getting acclimated to her outdoor habitat. Nearby are two male African lions named Brutus and Titus that arrived this year from Utah’s Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City.

Zoo Tip

The park is not difficult to navigate but as a heads-up, paper maps are not available. Download one on the zoo’s website or use a phone to snap a photo of the large map that is displayed at both the north and south entrances.

New Zoo Guidelines

Brookfield Zoo is committed to the well-being of guests, team members, and animals. The zoo has implemented enhanced protocols and procedures to provide a safe family-friendly experience. Advance online ticket purchase is not required, but the zoo will manage the traffic flow and limit the number of guests in the park. Expect adjustments to dining options and indoor attractions. Review the new guidelines before you go.
