The Oldest Mason Fort in the United States

Located on the western shore of Matanzas Bay in St. Augustine, Florida, Castillo de San Marcos is one of the largest and oldest structures in the United States (over 315 years). The Spanish stone fortress was built to protect Spain’s interest in the New World. It was involved in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War before being turned over to the National Park Service in 1933.

The National Monument is open 363 days a year from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Tickets are available onsite or in advance online.

Did you know? The Castillo has held three signers of the Declaration of Independence within its walls.

Things to Do

Self-guided Tours – Explore the fort at your own pace. Marvel at the 17th-century military construction, a prime example of the “bastion system” of fortification. You are visiting one of only two forts built of a porous limestone called coquina. The material is naturally available in the St. Augustine area and ideal for absorbing the impact of an enemy’s cannon balls.

Ranger-led Tours – Interpretive talks occur throughout the day and focus on the history and culture of the fort and the area. Check the daily schedule of events, the tours are a great way to understand why the fort was built and why it’s still here today.

Historical Demonstrations – Weapons demonstrations are performed daily by re-enactors dressed in period clothing. Don’t forget to ask about the daily cannon firing demonstration.
