Discover Alaska’s Gold Mining Heritage: Independence Mine State Historical Park

Jun 17, 2021 | West, General Travel

A slight detour off the Glenn Highway, just beyond the small town of Palmer, is the well-preserved remnants of the Independence Mine, one of Alaska’s largest gold mining operations. The mine operated from 1934 to 1951, during which time the miners excavated and processed over 165,000 ounces of gold. Today, the historic site is one of the 156 Alaskan state park units, and is typically open to the public from mid-June until Labor Day.

Things to Do: Part of the experience is the scenic drive into the Talkeetna Mountains, through Hatcher Pass. Continue the adventure at the park’s visitor center and museum, formerly the Mine Manager’s House. The interesting story of the mine, as well as the natural history and mining techniques, are covered through informative exhibits and displays. Spend the remainder of your visit on a self-guided interpretive tour of the gold mining camp, learning about the life of a miner in the remote Alaskan wilderness.

Travel Tip: Hatcher Pass and the Talkeetna Mountains are popular for scenic drives and outdoor recreation. Enjoy the views and take lots of pictures of the historic site and the beautiful surroundings.
