Amicalola Falls Overlook

Picturesque Amicalola Falls State Park is nestled in North Georgia’s Chattahoochee National Forest. About 20 miles to its east is the charming small town of Dahlonega, Georgia. A one- or two-day trip to the area is a great way to spend your weekend.

Start your trip by hiking up the falls. Plunging 729 feet, Amicalola Falls is the tallest waterfall in the southeastern United States. This state park is a favorite with both locals and visitors alike. The falls are only a short walk from the parking lot, but you must climb about 600 stairs to reach the top. The trails here are also the beginning of the Appalachian Trail, so you will see a lot of hikers starting their journey!

After your journey, make your way to downtown Dahlonega with its historic streets and public square. Grab some goodies at the Fudge Factory or the General Store. Have lunch at one of the restaurants on the square and then head to the Dahlonega Gold Museum. Who knew that the Gold Rush started in Georgia?

Dahlonega is also home to the best wineries in Georgia. Spend the afternoon tasting wine at the region’s largest— Kaya Vineyards. Take the winery tour to experience the best views and learn more about the winemaking process.

If you have the time, spend the night at The Smith House. This historic inn, built in 1844, has a mineshaft directly underneath! You can view it in the basement and see artifacts found inside on display.

BONUS: If you prefer to stay in nature, you can stay at the Amicalola Falls Lodge. This adventure lodge inside the state park has guided hikes, fly fishing, archery and many other activities.
