Europe in America: Belfast, Maine

Jun 12, 2020 | Northeast, Small Town Spotlight

Irish Origins in Mid-Coast Maine

Belfast, Maine, is a beautiful town with a red-brick historic district and working waterfront in mid-coast Maine. It was settled by Scots-Irish families in 1770 and named after the city of Belfast, Ireland. Belfast retains a quaint small-town vibe and the independent spirit of its namesake. You’ll find plenty of things to do in the area, from hiking and boating to shopping in the unique stores. The arts are alive and well in Belfast— it boasts more art galleries than any other Maine city its size! The dining options include quintessential Maine lobster, as well as handmade ice cream and even a James Beard-nominated restaurant.

Outdoor Activities

– The 2.3-mile Passy Rail Trail is great for walking, running, or biking. The Trail follows the route of the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad, a passenger and freight line that operated from 1871 to 2007 between Belfast and Burnham Junction. For a unique experience, you can rent a two-person “railcycle” for a guided pedal along the railroad tracks.

Moose Point State Park has hiking trails and tide pools to explore. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic with scenic views.

On the Water

– Learn to row— Come Boating! offers free community rowing for all skill levels in 32-foot Cornish rowing gigs on the Belfast waterfront.

– Enjoy the sights of Penobscot Bay on a sunset or day sail. We recommend Schooner Charm Charters for a fun-filled day on the water on a traditional sailing vessel.

– For an authentic Maine experience, take a cruise on a lobster boat and stop at Young’s Lobster Pound for a famed lobster roll with The Back and Forth charters.

Downtown

– Stroll through the charming historic district and stop at the many unique boutiques and shops. Some highlights include: the art-deco Colonial Theatre, local art galleries, renowned book shops, the oldest shoe store in America, and the largest year-round Maine farmers market, with over 70 vendors. When you need a rest, visit Dave’s Old-Fashioned Soda Fountain for a nostalgic treat.

Local Museums

– Visit the Belfast Historical Society & Museum to learn about the town’s history through vintage photographs, maps, and interpretive displays.

– The Penobscot Marine Museum in nearby Searsport is Maine’s oldest maritime museum and explores Maine’s rich maritime and shipbuilding history.
