Visit the Danish Capital of America

Just 45 minutes north of Santa Barbara in the foot of the Santa Ynez Mountains you will find the town of Solvang, California. Known as the Danish Capital of America, Solvang is famous for its windmills, architecture, bakeries, and many wineries. The Danish heritage dates back to 1911 when Danish-Americans settled here, and expanded in 1946 when town officials mandated the Danish architectural style and renovated the facades of downtown. Today, over a million visitors come to Solvang every year to experience the culture, food, and wine of the area.

Did You Know? A Danish tradition holds that the presence of a stork on a rooftop wards off lightning and brings good luck. See how many wooden storks you can find nesting on the buildings in Solvang!

Events & Festivals

Visit during one of Solvang’s festive annual events, like September’s Danish heritage festival, Solvang Danish Days. Since 1936, Danish Days has celebrated Solvang’s heritage with authentic food, music, dancing, parades, live entertainment and family activities. Solvang Julefest is a month-long holiday season event in December. The town shines with lights, music, shopping, and holiday cheer.

Museums & Attractions

– Visit the Elverhoj Museum of History and Art for exhibits on Danish culture, the history of Solvang, and art in a Scandinavian-inspired house.

– In the second floor of The Book Loft independent bookstore, you will find the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, dedicated to the famous author of The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid.

– Take a self-guided tour through Old Mission Santa Inés. The mission, founded in 1804, was one of the original 21 California Missions established by Franciscans along the Pacific Coast.

Outdoor Recreation

– Solvang offers many opportunities to get outside and enjoy the scenery and weather. Cycling is very popular in the area, from relaxed family bike tours to mid-level and strenuous rides. You can even get a guided cycling tour through the countryside from Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours. Another fun option is a guided horseback ride through a vineyard that ends with a glass of wine.

– Just a short distance from town is Nojoqui Falls Park. The 85-acre park offers picnic areas, a playground, and a short hike to view the 100-foot falls.

– In town, Hans Christan Andersen Park features a 1.7-mile easy out-and-back trail. There’s also a rock-climbing wall, skate park, and playground for an afternoon of fun.
