Europe in America: Tarpon Springs, Florida

Greek Heritage in the Sponge Capital of the World

The small town of Tarpon Springs, Florida, has over 50 miles of waterfront along the Gulf of Mexico and a maze of bayous and saltwater lakes. The town was incorporated in the late 1800’s as a winter retreat for wealthy tourists looking to escape cold winter weather. The waters around Tarpon Springs were abundant with sea sponges and, by the late 1880’s, the local sponge business was booming. To support the growth, divers were recruited from the Greek Islands, where sponge diving was more common. Today, Tarpon Springs has a higher percentage of Greek Americans than any other place the United States, with about ten percent of the residents of Greek descent.

Greek culture and heritage is plentiful in Tarpon Springs, from the beautiful St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and St. Michael’s Shrine to the charming Greektown Historic District. The downtown center, featuring brick streets, is filled with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants located among the 145 buildings listed on the National Historic Register.

Did You Know? The largest Epiphany celebration in America is celebrated at Spring Bayou in Tarpon Springs. Every January 6th, young men seeking a year of good luck dive in the chilly waters to retrieve a cross. The event has been taking place for over 100 years and attracts over 10,000 spectators cheering on the brave participants.

Events & Festivals

Plan your visit to Tarpon Springs around one of the many annual festivals. Popular Greek heritage festivals include the Greek Independence Day Parade, Athens by Night, and the Feast Day of St. Nicholas Procession. Other events hosted along the world-famous Sponge Docks include the annual Fine Arts Festival, Seafood Festival, and the Holiday Illuminated Boat Parade. Each of the festivals is unique, but expect authentic Greek food, dancing, and live entertainment while enjoying the small-town experience.

Museums & Attractions

– A great place to learn about Greek culture is the Heritage Museum, located in Craig Park. The small museum showcases the area’s heritage with a permanent exhibit “The Greek Community of Tarpon Springs.” Other exhibits highlight the Sea Sponge Industry and a series of murals depicts Florida’s history going back to early European explorations.

– The railroad was an important part of Tarpon Springs during the late 1800’s and into the 1900’s. A visit to the Train Depot Museum, operated by the Tarpon Springs Area Historical Society, features a restored historic train station and exhibits detailing the importance of train service to local industries as the community of Tarpons Springs expanded with a growing immigrant population and people relocating from around the United States.

– A visit to the 1883 Safford House Museum allows guests to journey back in time and visit the restored Victorian home of one of the city’s original developers. The museum is operated by the City of Tarpon Springs.

– Take a break from the history and cultural heritage and spend a few hours at the Tarpon Springs Aquarium. The aquarium is a local favorite featuring sharks, rays, alligators, turtles, and, of course, saltwater fish. Say hello to Oscar the Goliath Grouper and enjoy the daily animal shows.

Outdoor Activities

– There are two beautiful white sand beach options in Tarpon Springs— choose between Sunset Beach and the beach in Fred Howard Park. After a busy day of exploring, the parks are a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico.

– Climb aboard a ferry headed to Anclote Key Preserve State Park. The State Park is located three miles offshore and includes Anclote Key, North Anclote Bar, South Anclote Bar, and Three Rooker Island. Visit the lighthouse and spend the day birdwatching— there are 43 species of birds on the island, depending on the time of year.

– The largest tour boat tethered to the Sponge Docks belongs to Odyssey Cruises. Book a dolphin adventure nature cruise, sunset or sightseeing cruise. We recommend something a little more unique— a Sea Shelling Trip. The captain will bring you to an island where there is much less competition for the coveted perfect sand dollar.
