Explore Boston Harbor Islands National & State Park

Jul 17, 2021 | Northeast, General Travel

The largest recreation area in eastern Massachusetts consists of 34 islands and peninsulas covering over 50 square miles across Boston Harbor and stretching to the mainland of a few of the nearby cities and towns. A short ferry ride allows visitors to explore natural areas and historic sites that are just out of sight of Boston’s world-class museums, attractions, restaurants, and hotels. Begin your experience at the Boston Harbor Island Welcome Center before boarding a narrated ferry to your destination of choice. From history and nature to outdoor activities, there is something for everyone at this unique recreation area.

Things to Do

  • Georges and Spectacle Islands are considered the “hub” islands, with the most ferry options and amenities that include state of the art visitor centers, concessions, and interpretative programs. While on Georges Island, take a tour of the Civil War-Era Fort Warren. Spectacle Island is perfect for outdoor recreation, with over 100 acres to hike, observe wildlife, and explore.
  • Board a two or three hour narrated cruise and learn about three of America’s most historic lighthouses. Hear the stories and get close-up views of Long Island Light, Graves Light, and Boston Light, America’s first light station.
  • Enjoy a relaxing day at one of the rustic islands that generally attract fewer visitors. Lovells, Grape, and Bumpkin Islands are great choices for enjoying a causal day hiking, tide pooling, and bird watching with amazing views of the Boston skyline in the distance.
  • Take a unique tour of the Deer Island Sewage Treatment Plant. The facility is accessible by car and is responsible for removing pollutants from wastewater coming from 43 Boston area communities. While visiting, learn about the processes and equipment that protect the waters around Boston Harbor.
  • Reserve a campsite at one of the many islands designated for overnight use. It’s important to understand the amenities available (or not) before planning a memorable evening under the stars in Boston Harbor.

Travel Tip: The best islands to visit this year are Georges and Spectacle Island, with daily ferry service and a majority of the services and amenities available to visitors.
