Exploring Plimoth Plantation

Nov 23, 2019 | Blog, Northeast, Weekend Adventure

The town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, is located an hour south of Boston and is an easy addition to a visit to Cape Cod, Boston, or Providence, Rhode Island. See the historic Plymouth Rock, and then head 10 minutes outside of town to Plimoth Plantation, a great place for history buffs and families to spend the day. This living history museum includes an authentic Wampanoag Native American homesite and a 17th century village.

Visit

Begin your visit to Plimoth Plantation at the Hornblower Visitor Center to buy tickets and watch a brief orientation film. There is also a gift shop and café onsite.

The first stop on your self-guided tour is the authentic Wampanoag Homesite. The people you encounter here are Native People of either Wampanoag or other descent. They are here to share their history and traditions, including burning out a log to make a canoe. The homesite includes quite a few mat-covered homes as well as a larger long house.

The next stop takes you back in time to 1627 into a replica of a 17th century village. Here the people you meet are costumed actors portraying residents of the colony. You can walk through the village and into any of the buildings, where the villagers will happily tell you about their lives and walk you through their daily tasks.

Grist Mill

If you buy a combo ticket at the Visitor Center, you can also visit the Plimoth Grist Mill, located in the town of Plymouth. The working reproduction mill tells the story of the mill built by the Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony. Explore the building and learn about the process of grinding corn.

Events

“The Story of Thanksgiving” Dinner invites you to enjoy Thanksgiving where the national celebration began. Pilgrim role players and Native interpreters greet you at this special meal. This is a very popular annual event and some seatings sell out quickly.

A Spirited Winter Village is a unique perspective of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Join Ebenezer Scrooge after the ghosts have left for an evening of merriment in the 17th century village!
