Five Amazing Day Trips: Colorado

Colorado is home to four spectacular national parks and dozens of beautiful recreation areas across every region. Experience the Rocky Mountain lifestyle in impressive major cities and amazing small towns with outdoor activities galore. There really is so much to see, from Rocky Mountain National Park in the north to the Maroon Bells and the Colorado Plateau in the west and Pike’s Peak to the south. Scenic drives in every direction take you over mountain passes with surprises and points of interest at every turn. Many of the towns showcase the rich heritage and cultures of the past, providing a unique experience only available in Colorado. Our day trips leave from Denver and highlight fun destinations with outdoor recreational activities.
Here are five road trips across the Centennial State:

Boulder (Outdoor Activities)
Located only 30 miles northwest of Denver, Boulder is paradise for anyone who loves cycling, hiking, climbing, and many other outdoor activities. Just a short drive from downtown are dozens of trails that take you to waterfalls, summits, canyons, and spectacular views of the Flatirons. Eldorado Canyon State Park is a local favorite, especially for rock climbers. The trails pass along towering sandstone cliffs and narrow canyon walls. Spend a few hours in the friendly downtown area, full of historic buildings, eclectic stores, and a wide range of dining options. Grab a table at one of the may outdoor cafés for a delicious meal and some great people watching!!

Breckenridge (Outdoor Activities)
The four-season destination of Breckenridge is located 80 miles west of Denver and is perfect for outdoor adventures in warmer weather and amazing skiing during the winter months. During the summer, spend the day exploring the Boreas Pass Road, formerly the world’s highest narrow-gauge railroad for transportation between Denver and Leadville. Today, you can hike, bike, or drive the pass as it rises to 11,482 feet and crosses over the Continental Divide. During the autumn season, be rewarded with breathtaking views of yellow aspens along the Blue River Valley and the Tenmile Range. After the first big snowfall, hit the slopes at Breckenridge Mountain or opt to cross-country ski and snowshoe at the Breckenridge Nordic Center. It doesn’t matter what time of year, Main Street Breckenridge never disappoints, with dozens of shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants. If you are looking for outdoor gear, Breckenridge is the place to find it!!

Colorado Springs (Museums & Attractions)
An ideal location for family fun, Colorado Springs is located about 70 miles south of Denver and has an almost an endless list of outdoor activities, historic and cultural sites, museums, and entertainment. This day trip takes you to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, America’s only mountain zoo. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the zoo houses over 750 animals across 150 species. Since 1954, more than 200 reticulated giraffes have been born here, and today the zoo maintains one of the largest giraffe herds in captivity anywhere. Make memories during your visit and participate in one of the feeding experiences. Choose from giraffes, elephants, rhinos, and fun barnyard animals. If you still have time before leaving Colorado Springs, stop by the Broadmoor Resort and explore the beautiful resort property. After your visit to the Broadmoor and Colorado Springs, you’ll probably want to extend your stay to at least a long weekend in the near future.

Estes Park (Parks & Recreation)
Take the scenic route on the Peak to Peak Highway to the charming small town of Estes Park for a day of outdoor activities and wildlife spotting. Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, just 65 miles northwest of Denver. Choose from dozens of trails that lead to gorgeous lakes, spectacular waterfalls, and stunning peaks. If the park feels a little crowded on the east side, drive west on Trail Ridge Road. Once the road rises above the tree line, be rewarded with amazing views in every direction. Another option while visiting Estes Park is to book a guided excursion. There are many tours to choose from in town, including sightseeing jeep tours, photography tours, hiking guides, and rafting trips. Plan a few hours to explore the boutique stores, candy shops, unique galleries, and local restaurants in downtown Estes Park – an excellent way to end your Rocky Mountain day trip.

Fort Collins (Tours & Experiences)
For the outdoor enthusiasts, Fort Collins has over 50 local parks, 280 miles of hiking and biking trails, and waterways to fish and kayak. For the craft beer enthusiast and foodie, the city is home to 20 award-winning craft breweries and a diverse culinary scene. Located only 65 miles north of Denver, this unique day trip combines two of the popular activities in town: biking and craft breweries. Spend the afternoon with a guide from Beer and Bike Tours and enjoy an easy going pedal to three local breweries. After the tour, stroll around Old Town to enjoy its unique stores, coffee shops, cafes and restaurants.
