Happy National Doughnut Day!
From glazed to cream-filled, doughnuts are a delicious breakfast treat. In recent years, doughnut shops across the country have perfected their art and created more inventive flavors than ever before. We have chosen five standouts that elevate the doughnut to the next level.

The Doughnut Project
New York, NY
This colorful shop serves small-batch, hand-crafted doughnuts in two Manhattan locations. The Doughnut Project combines some of the best-tasting doughnuts around with artistic looks and flavor, inspired by the variety of food and cocktails in NYC. All of the doughnuts are yeast-raised and you will want to try a few. Come in and see what’s on their creative menu for the day and then have a seat at the counter to enjoy your choice with a cup of coffee. They take orders until 6pm the day before, and they stay open until they are sold out!
Standout Flavors :
• Those Beetz Are Dope (beet glaze with ricotta filling)
• Everything Doughnut (think an everything bagel, made into a doughnut)
• Strawberry Milkshake (strawberry, malt, and heavy cream glaze)
• Chandonut Rosé (our favorite— sparkling rosé, garnished with rose petals)
The Holy Donut
Portland, ME
Portland’s Holy Donut makes potato doughnuts, rather than the typical all-flour, by hand with local ingredients. Show up early, there will be a line and they usually sell out fast. The doughnuts come in a wide variety of flavors, and there are always gluten-free and vegan options on the menu. They now have two locations and close up shop once the day’s doughnuts are gone.
Standout Flavors:
• Maine Blueberry (A must!)
• Dark Chocolate Sea Salt (the most popular)
• Allen’s Coffee Brandy (a Maine-made liquor)
• Ginger Glazed (sweet-potato based and cannoli-inspired)
Revolution Donuts
Decatur, GA
At Revolution Donuts, in Decatur, GA, they make all their doughnuts from scratch with real ingredients: organic flour, local dairy, fresh fruit, and natural flavor extracts. They opened on Donut Day in 2012, and after packing the store every weekend, opened a second location in 2017. The doughnut flavors are creative, and farm-to-table inspired. They also have almond flour-based doughnuts for those with gluten sensitivities.
Stand Out Flavors:
• Birthday Funfetti (cake-based with frosting and sprinkles)
• Fresh Peach Slider (yeast doughnuts sliced in half and filled with Georgia peaches)
• Oatmeal Cookie Dough (just like the cookie!)
• Orange Pistachio (orange glazed and sprinkled with pistachios)
The Salty Donut
Miami, FL
This is an artisan doughnut shop in Miami, Florida. The Salty Donut makes craft doughnuts with flavors that rotate with the seasons. The line for these creative, fluffy doughnuts is always out the door. Customer feedback is important to them, and they often bring back beloved flavors by request. In May 2019 they opened a second location in South Miami.
Standout Flavors:
• Blueberry Passion Fruit (made especially for Doughnut Day!)
• White Chocolate Tres Leches (brioche soaked in rum and three milk mixture)
• Mini Key Lime Pie (key lime infused glaze and graham cracker crumbles)
• Guava and Cheese (brioche filled with fresh guava and cream cheese)

Voodoo Doughnut
Portland, OR
One of the most famous doughnut shops around, Voodoo Doughnut opened in 2003. This institution is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you can always feed your doughnut craving. The line can wrap around the block, and there are regularly new creations on the menu. They have expanded to six more locations as far away as Florida. Fun fact: the shop performs weddings underneath a giant “holy” doughnut.
Standout Flavors:
• Portland Cream (the official doughnut of the city)
• Voodoo Doll (doughnut in the shape of a doll with raspberry filling and a pretzel stake!)
• Graham Slam (vanilla fluff filled and covered in Golden Grahams)
• Mango Tango (filled with mango jelly and topped with vanilla frosting dusted with Tang)
