Visalia and Three Rivers: Gateways to Sequoia & Kings Canyon

Approaching Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks from the west takes you through the fertile Central Valley before reaching the scenic High Sierras. Just 30 miles west of the Ash Mountain Park Entrance you’ll find the city of Visalia, considered the gateway to the national parks. On its own, Visalia is a great destination to visit for family fun, outdoor recreation, and the local culinary scene. The historic Fox Theatre, located among the farm-to-table restaurants and boutique shops on Main Street, is an amazing venue in town that hosts live productions and performances.

With limited lodging in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Visalia is a great option to use as home base to experience all the sights and points of interest within Tulare County. The scenic drive from Visalia on State Route 198 never gets old as it passes along beautiful Lake Kaweah before reaching the charming village of Three Rivers and then extends through the national parks. Three Rivers is truly an extension of the parks, providing that “we are here” feeling as well as a thriving art scene with local shops and galleries, a variety of cafés and restaurants, and a handful of unique lodging options.
