The Highest Point in Massachusetts: Mount Greylock

Oct 9, 2021 | Northeast, Nature & Wildlife

At an elevation of 3,491 feet, the highest point in Massachusetts is located in The Berkshires region within Mount Greylock State Reservation. The wilderness park, which measures 12,500 acres, was established in 1898 under the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation. Popular for day-use activities, including scenic drives, sightseeing, hiking, biking, and winter sports, the park also features a visitor center, historic lodge, and campground. The iconic 93-foot-tall Massachusetts Veterans War Memorial Tower, is the most-visited and photographed location in the reservation.

Things to Do

  • Summit Mount Greylock on the Scenic Auto Road for views that stretch across five states (Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire). The road is open from late May through October and is one of the most popular destinations in Massachusetts to witness the changing of the seasons and the stunning fall foliage.
  • Start your day at the visitor center, the best place to get familiar with the park. The center is staffed year-round, and the knowledgeable rangers offer park maps and information as well as updates on current conditions across the network of trails.
  • Hiking is one of the most popular recreational activities in the reservation. There are over 70 miles of trails across all experience levels, including an 11.5-mile segment of the Appalachian Trail. During the winter months, the trail network is an outdoor wonderland for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.
  • The Bascom Lodge was originally built as a shelter and resting place for hikers after reaching the summit. Today, the historic lodge provides a rustic overnight experience with nine rooms for outdoor enthusiasts and families to extend their outdoor adventures. The lodge and the campground are very popular with hikers traveling along the Appalachian Trail.
  • With over 90 miles of visibility on a clear day, bring your camera to capture stunning landscapes from high above the Hoosac Valley.

Travel Tip: During the weekends throughout the month of October, traffic can cause congestion on the road leading to Mount Greylock’s summit, so get there early and enjoy breakfast at Bascom Lodge. Plan on exploring more of The Berkshires on your weekend getaway— there are dozens of nearby small towns and family-oriented points of interest to enjoy on your trip.
