Dec 4, 2019 | Blog, South, General Travel

Whether you were a Girl Scout or you are just interested in history, the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is a fascinating place to visit in Savannah. Juliette Gordon Low was the founder of the Girl Scouts and her birthplace is now a historic house museum open to the public. The house is right in the heart of Savannah on Oglethorpe Avenue and is an easy walk from many of the hotels, restaurants, and museums in the area.

Visit

Guided tours of the home are offered six days a week, Monday through Saturday. You can purchase tickets at the door, but we recommend purchasing online in advance, as the tours can fill up quickly. Note: The house is only accessible by guided tour, there are no self-guided tours.

Tours

Tours of the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace last about 40 minutes and include the interior of the house as well as a walk through the gardens. You will learn about the history of the Girl Scouts and get an overview of Juliette’s (“Daisy” to her close friends and family) life. She was very creative, and the house contains many pieces of her artwork, including portraits and sculptures. Original and period furnishings are displayed throughout the house. The final stop of the tour is an interactive library exhibit, Girls Writing the World.

After the tour, stop by the gift shop for local gifts, items made by women and girls around the world, and Girl Scout merchandise.

Other related local points of interest include the Andrew Low House, which was Juliette’s adult home, and the Laurel Grove Cemetery, where she was laid to rest in her Girl Scout uniform.

Bonus: Grab a cup of coffee before or after your tour at The Coffee Fox and then do some shopping at The Paris Market, both on nearby Broughton Street.
