New Jersey’s Highest Point: High Point State Park

Things to Do
- For a bird’s-eye view of the area below, climb to the top of the 220-foot High Point Monument. After walking up almost 300 steps, the unobstructed views extend into neighboring New York and Pennsylvania. The monument, a memorial to New Jersey veterans, is open from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. The park is an excellent place to experience the changing of the seasons and capture the fall foliage.
- Considered one of the best hiking destinations in New Jersey, the park features over 50 miles of trails, including 18-miles of the Appalachian Trail. The multi-use trail system can also be used for mountain biking, horse riding, and a range of winter sports activities, including cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
- Visit the highest elevation cedar swamp in the world, a habitat that is typically found at lower elevations along the coast. The park is home to the Dryden Kyser Natural Area, which can be reached using the Cedar Swamp Trail, Monument Trail, and Steenykill Trail. While carefully exploring that area, keep a look out for the endangered three-toothed cinquefoil.
- On the weekends, visit the park’s Interpretive Center, located near the entrance in the restored Grey Rock Inn. The center offers hands-on educational and nature programs that are excellent for children of all ages and the entire family.
- The High Point Cross-Country Ski Center becomes the hub for recreational activity during the winter months. When weather permits, the park offers almost 10 miles of groomed trails. The center offers cross-country skis and snowshoes for rent.
