October in America’s Original Seaside Resort: Cape May, New Jersey

Oct 1, 2021 | Northeast, Small Town Spotlight

During the summer months, families flock to the seaside resort town of Cape May to enjoy outdoor activities by day and evenings walking around the pedestrian-friendly historic district, with its great restaurants and eclectic shops. The challenge for many is securing a room at one of the unforgettable historic resorts or trendy boutique hotels. As the summer crowds wane, the autumn months offer a laundry list of fall activities and more available lodging.

Things to Do

The historic district comprises one of the country’s largest collections of free-standing 19th century architecture and is the hub for weekend getaways or family vacations. The beach and boardwalk are popular during any season, even if you have to bundle up to take a walk along the expansive beach.

Here are some activities to include on your fall visit to the charming small town:

  • The Cold Spring Village living history museum is celebrating its 29th Annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 16, 2021. Then, start your Halloween celebration with a haunted walk through the village— the Ghoul Spring Village Event takes place on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24.
  • Emlen Physick Estate, the 18-room mansion and architectural wonder built by famed American architect Frank Furne for the Physick family, is hosting a few seasonal events, including the Magic and Mystery House Tour and the new theatrical production, The Gloomy Apparition 2 – A Gloomier Apparition!
  • Cape May Lighthouse, one of the most-visited destinations in Cape May, is offering a Ghosts of the Lighthouse Trolley Tour from September 20 through October 20, and a Lighthouse Full Moon Climb on October 20. Don’t miss a chance to experience this jewel of Cape May Point State Park after dark.
  • Ghost Capers Ghost Tour gives tours of Cape May, Friday through Sunday during the month of October. Book your spot in advance to hear spooky stories on a lantern-lit walk through the historic district.
  • Bring the family to one of the local farms for hayrides, apple picking, pumpkin picking, corn mazes, farm animals, and dozens of other family activities. Two of the local favorites are: Sahl’s Father Son Farm in Egg Harbor City, and R and J Farm in Galloway Township.
