Off the Beaten Path: The Porcupine Mountains in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Mar 23, 2022 | Midwest, General Travel

Located on the shores of Lake Superior and affectionately called the “Porkies,” the Porcupine Mountains are the centerpiece of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula might not be on your short list of places to visit, at least until you discover the eclectic towns and natural beauty that is coveted by the Midwesterners who come back every summer.

The state park includes almost 50,000 acres of wooded forests, beautiful lakes, flowing rivers, and seasonal streams— the perfect setting for an almost endless list of outdoor recreation and family fun. Visit during the summer months to hike, bike, and fish while staying in a lakeside resort, charming inn, or rustic cabin. During the winter months, bring your cross-country skis and snowshoes to explore the vast wilderness in search of frozen waterfalls or perhaps catch a glimpse of a gray wolf in its natural environment.

Travel Tip: The Porcupine Mountains are only one of the many great places to visit in the Upper Peninsula. Plan a road trip along Lake Michigan that includes stops at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Isle Royal National Park, and make sure you to book your ferry or seaplane well in advance.
