Small Town Spotlight: Winterset, Iowa

Nov 19, 2019 | Blog, Midwest, Small Town Spotlight

Winterset, Iowa, is home to the famous Bridges of Madison County. Located just a short drive from Des Moines, the small town’s other claim to fame is being the birthplace of John Wayne. This picturesque place also has a quaint town square, delicious food, outdoor activities, and is especially charming this time of year.

The Bridges of Madison County

Known as the “covered bridge capital of the world,” the Winterset area is home to six covered bridges that inspired the novel and movie The Bridges of Madison County. Make a stop at the Chamber of Commerce’s Welcome Center to pick up a free map of all the bridge locations. Make sure not to miss Hogback Covered Bridge, probably the most photogenic and one of the original 19 bridges in the region.

John Wayne Birthplace Museum

Explore a museum dedicated to “The Duke” and see his restored home at the John Wayne Birthplace Museum. The museum holds the largest exhibit of John Wayne artifacts in existence, including original movie posters, film wardrobe, scripts, contracts, letters, artwork. Take a picture with the super-sized bronze sculpture of the Hollywood legend in front of the museum.
