The SPAM Museum in Austin, Minnesota

Nov 3, 2019 | Blog, Midwest, Museums & Attractions

Whether you are a fan of the canned meat known as SPAM or not, the SPAM Museum in Austin, Minnesota is a fun, quirky (and free!) place to spend a few hours. The museum is a celebration of everything SPAM, with exhibits that educate visitors on its history, evolution, and influence.

Did you know?  SPAM was created to help our military servicemen in World War II. Over 100 million pounds were shipped abroad to feed allied troops during the war.

The SPAM Museum highlights how there are certain parts of the world that really love it. Hawaii alone eats 7 million cans per year! And in Southeast Asia SPAM is given as a luxury gift.

The museum also has some fun interactive exhibits where you can measure your height in Spam cans, try “Spamples”, and even practice assembling mock Spam cans.

Free guided tours are available every Saturday and Sunday on the hour and last about 30 minutes. The onsite gift shop sells Spam merchandise and all 15 (!) different flavor varieties.

Bonus: Take a tour of the nearby Hormel Historic Home while you are in Austin, the former home of George Hormel, founder of the Hormel food company.
