Tour the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas

Your visit to the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas brings you back 300 years to the Spanish Mission, originally known as the Misión San Antonio de Valero. The purpose of the Spanish mission was to educate and convert Native Americans to the Christian faith.

There are many stories to be told and events that took place exactly where you will be standing:

  • 1700’s – The Alamo was the first of the San Antonio Missions
  • 1836 – The site of the Battle of the Alamo
  • Today – A National Historic Landmark located in the Alamo Plaza Historic District

Tour Options

Visiting the Alamo is free; however, we highly recommend taking one of the guided tours in order to understand the history and events that took place here.

A Story Bigger than Texas – is a one-hour tour that explores the events that have made the story of the Alamo captivating for generations of Texans and visitors. The tour takes you through the area that was the original footprint of the Spanish mission complex (today Alamo Plaza), describing the heros and events leading up to and including the Battle of the Alamo. The tour then concludes inside the Alamo Church.

Young Texans Tour – is a 45-minute interactive tour designed just for kids. Intended for children ages 5-12, the tour explains what life would have been like for the families that lived here during the Mission period and for the men defending the Alamo in 1836. Designed for a child’s imagination, this tour will lead your family through the church, courtyards, and gardens ending in the Living History Encampment.

Self-Guided Audio Tour – is a rich, 45-minute audio production that brings the story of the Alamo to life.

Special Exhibits

The Fortress Alamo: The Key to Texas exhibit opened on February 1, 2019. The exhibit explores the long and proud history of the Alamo as a fort and the role it played in creating the city of San Antonio. Learn about the story of the site’s long military history and how the Alamo’s position on the Texas frontier led to San Antonio becoming known as Military City, USA.

Special Events

Remember: A Musical Honoring Those Who Gave Their Lives For Texas. Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Carlos Espalier, Jim Bowie, and William Barret Travis sought better lives in Texas— a land of liberty, a land of new beginnings, a land of hope. And at the heart of the story, of Texas and all Texans to come is the Alamo. One day only (February 29, 2020) 

Other Missions

If you enjoyed your time at the Alamo, consider visiting the other four San Antonio Missions, collectively called San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, operated by the National Park Service. After stopping in the Visitor Center, you’ll drive to the Mission Concepcion (the oldest unrestored stone church in America), Mission San Jose (the largest mission in San Antonio), Mission San Juan (including the San Juan farm), and Mission Espada (the first mission in Texas).
