Stop #25 on our Virtual Road Trip is the California Surf Museum in Oceanside, California! The museum showcases surfing with rotating exhibits and a permanent collection that encompasses the sport’s art, history, and culture. With a collection that began over 30 years ago and donations from surfing enthusiasts, including surfboards, trophies, magazines, rare photographs, and more— the experience is beyond expectations.

Travel Tip: The California Surf Museum is a specialty museum that some people may think is only interesting to surfing enthusiasts. That is definitely not the case, as the collection is diverse and each of the artifacts has a great story. Don’t be surprised if you spend more time in the museum than you originally planned and don’t forget your camera— grab a few shots with the amazing surfboard collection!!
Following the Connection
One of the exhibits at the Museum is about Bethany Hamilton, a young woman who lost her arm in a shark attack while surfing in Hawaii. The exhibit includes the actual surfboard she was riding and her bathing suit. You will probably remember the story from the national news. To learn more about the heroic individuals who save people at sea, the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum has great exhibits, interesting stories, and a fabulous location.
