Virtual Roadtrip: Devils Tower National Monument

The First National Monument in the United States

Stop #19 on our Virtual Road Trip is Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming! Devils Tower was the first National Monument in the United States, established in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Now there are 83 National Monuments managed by the National Park Service across the United States. Devils Tower has long been a sacred place for over 20 Native American tribes.

The National Monument encompasses approximately 1,347 acres, but the tower is the main attraction, rising 5,112 feet above sea level. Prior to exploring the grounds, most visitors to the park stop at the 1930’s-era ponderosa pine log building that was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Today the building functions as an information station staffed with park rangers, and also includes a great bookstore/gift shop and educational exhibits.

There are five hiking trails in the park, all of which provide excellent views of Devils Tower. The trails are connected and vary in length and difficulty. The most popular activity is a casual walk along the 1.3-mile paved Tower Trail Loop. Throughout the summer months the park hosts ranger and night sky programs. All programs are listed on the schedule of events on the park’s online event calendar.

Travel Tip: An entry fee is required, and the peak season is between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Parking is limited, so we recommend planning your visit during the week to avoid the larger weekend crowds.

For the Adventurous: Less than one percent of the estimated 500,000 annual visitors climb Devil’s Tower. Climbing enthusiasts can register for a permit with the climbing office and carefully scale the igneous rock. The climbing permit is free, proper climbing gear is required, and the routes to the top are well documented on the park site.

Following the Connection

Theodore Roosevelt was an advocate of the National Park System and during his presidency signed legislation to create five new national parks and eighteen national monuments. We all know he was a major advocate of conservation and the National Park System, but not as many people are aware that he recruited over 1,250 men to form the Rough Riders from a bar in a historic hotel in San Antonio, Texas.

Next Stop: The Menger Hotel, San Antonio, Texas

Detour: Devils Tower is a classic American Road Trip destination for drivers traveling through the West. For something a little more off the beaten path, a visit to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota will check off a U.S. State and National Park that most people never see.
