Stowe, Vermont is famous for its winter skiing, so it makes sense that it is also home to the Vermont Ski & Snowboard Museum. When you’re taking a break from the slopes and exploring the charming downtown, the museum is a great place to stop and learn about Vermont’s rich skiing history. The building was originally the Old Town Meeting House, built in 1818. Today, the museum’s collection includes over 8,000 ski-related items and the Vermont Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.
Visit
The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 12-5pm. There is a suggested donation of $5 per person. The permanent collection includes ski and snowboard equipment, ski and snowboard clothing, mechanical equipment, a fine art area, and a library of archival materials.
Hall of Fame
Every year, the museum honors athletes, pioneers, and special contributors of Vermont skiing and snowboarding who promoted and/or contributed to the sport of skiing or riding in Vermont. Their accomplishments are recognized at an Induction Ceremony and their histories are documented in the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum’s collection as part of the permanent Vermont Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame exhibit.

Surfing Snow: Vermont Inspired Boards– Hall of Fame 2019 inductee, JG Gerndt, curates a collection of boards that tell the story of snowboarding technology. Gerndt was a full-time Burton employee in product development and, over a thirty-plus year career in Vermont, played a preeminent role in designing revolutionary surf-inspired boards for legendary snowboarders. Two Contests: Competing in Biathlon (Opening February 2020)- Vermont has led the way in developing biathlon training facilities and youth development programs through a unique partnership with the US Army and Vermont National Guard. The exhibit will examine the relationship between biathlon and the military – making connections to the 10th Mountain Division, the pioneering efforts of Vermont ski clubs and ski areas in providing training and facilities, and the success past and present Vermont athletes have had internationally, and their role in increasing the awareness of biathlon in the US.
Bonus: Stay at the Trapp Family Lodge. The Austrian-inspired mountain resort is managed by the von Trapp family of Sound of Music fame. Have a beer at the adjacent Von Trapp Bierhall that was brewed onsite!
