What’s New at the Garden: The New York Botanical Garden is Now Open!

Aug 4, 2020 | Northeast, Nature & Wildlife

The New York Botanical Garden is now open with 250 acres of beautiful gardens and trails to explore with the family. The seasonal highlights include the Rockefeller Rose Garden, Chilton Azalea Garden, Native Plant Garden, Perennial Garden, and Conservatory Courtyards.

Spend the day casually walking through the 50 different gardens and plant collections. Take one of the longer trails through the never-logged, old growth forest section of the gardens. With timed entry, there won’t be any crowds and there’s something new every time you visit.

New Garden Guidelines

The New York Botanical Garden has incorporated new procedures to allow as many people as possible to safely enjoy the outdoors while visiting the gardens. Some of the more noticeable additions are cleaning and disinfecting stations and signage to encourage social distancing.

It’s best to purchase your tickets online through the Garden’s website, and reservations can be made up to two weeks in advance. You will be required to choose the time slot for your visit, with a limited number of guests allowed to enter the Garden every hour. There’s a one-hour grace period if you are running a little late. Same-day tickets may be available at the main entrance, but there is no guarantee. Last but not least, New York City residents receive a discount!!

The Garden is open from 10:00am – 6:00pm, Tuesday through Sunday, and on select holiday Mondays.

Visitors will notice that most of the indoor areas are closed at this time, as it would be difficult to social distance along the narrow pathways. For the time being, the restrictions involve the Haupt Conservatory, Mertz Library Building, Edible Academy, Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, and Rock Garden.

Masks are required for all guests ages 2 and up. If you forget your mask, they are available for purchase at the Garden ticket windows.

The Pine Tree Café is open with outdoor seating. On select dates, pop-up refreshments will be available near the Hudson Garden Grill and the Rose Garden.

The NYBG Shop is open and offers gardening tools and accessories, botanical books, prints, rare plants, and unique gifts for the garden lover.

Garden Tips

Download the New York Botanical Garden app before visiting— the audio tour provides insight into specific plants, gardens, collections, and more.

You will want to travel light, as the coat check and bag storage are not available at this time.

Check the website for all the necessary information that will make your trip to the New York Botanical Garden a highlight of 2020!
