The seaport village of Mystic, located in northeastern Connecticut, has a long maritime history, dating back to when it was a bustling merchant and shipbuilding center. Today, Mystic is one of the best small towns in New England and attracts visitors to its charming downtown, world-class aquarium, impressive maritime museum, and the Olde Mistick Village shopping area. Don’t expect to see it all in one day— it will be a challenge just choosing where to begin! Families love the AZA-accredited Mystic Aquarium, with over 10,000 animals to see in both indoor and outdoor exhibits, including Beluga whales, Stellar sea lions, and African penguins. Another popular area attraction, the Mystic Seaport Museum is considered one of the leading maritime museums in the country and displays a comprehensive collection of rare and unique artifacts within its historic buildings. The museum is also known for preserving and maintaining historic ships, the most notable being the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan. A trip to Mystic isn’t complete without a stroll through the downtown, filled with boutique stores and local cafés, and an overnight stay at one of the charming inns or boutique hotels.
