21 U.S. Destinations to Visit in 2021: Portland, Maine

Jan 17, 2021 | Northeast, General Travel

The Old Port and Arts districts of Portland, Maine, are foodie havens, where award-winning chefs have created a culinary scene you would expect to find in much larger cities. Its historic district has long been a popular New England getaway, with luxury hotels, charming inns, and boutique stores nestled among the many coffee shops, cafés, bars, and restaurants. There has never been a better time to visit— after almost a year’s worth of travel restrictions, the establishments are looking forward to welcoming visitors back.

Portland is a year-round destination— you’ve got to bundle up during the winter months, but it’s much easier to get a reservation at one of the more popular culinary gems and there are plenty of cozy fireplaces to keep you warm. The offseason is also a great time to explore Portland’s brewery scene. Start your tours and tastings at Geary Brewing Company, the first craft brewery in New England. With the warmer weather comes the migration of visitors seeking the slightly cooler summer temperatures, fresh seafood, and activities along the picturesque coastline. For an unforgettable experience, board a Casco Bay Lines ferry and head to one of the nearby islands, spend the day exploring on foot, and have lunch at one of the many casual seafood spots.

No trip to Portland is complete without taking the scenic drive to nearby Cape Elizabeth, home of Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park. This is the most photographed lighthouse in the country! The locals might tell you, “Can’t Get There from Here,” but it’s worth the trip to discover Portland, Maine.

Local Islands: Bailey Island, Chebeague Island, Great Diamond Island, Little Diamond Island, Peaks Island
