An Appalachian Mountain Adventure: Pisgah National Forest

Things to Do
- Many of the trailheads are located just off US 276, which travels between the mountain towns of Brevard and Waynesville. There are hundreds of miles of trails, ranging from a relaxing casual walk to a strenuous day hike to one of the many mile-high peaks. The most popular trails lead to waterfalls, such as Looking Glass and Moore Cove Falls. For a challenge, hike to the top of Mt. Pisgah (5,721 feet)— the short trail (1.6 miles) elevates 712 feet from the parking area to the summit.
- Visit the Cradle of Forestry in America, the birthplace of science-based teachings of the first U.S. Forestry School. Today, the Forest Discovery Center is geared towards families with films, exhibits, and interactive experiences and programs. Step outside and explore the walking trails with interpretive signs and interesting historic sites related to the early days of forest preservation and stewardship.
- During the summer months, enjoy the peacefulness of the forest while floating downstream on an inner tube or on a guided river-rafting trip. The area outfitters offer a wide range of options, from tube rentals and shuttle services to full day adrenaline-filled adventures.
- The forest is home to some of the best mountain biking on the east coast. A few of the most popular mountain biking trails are Black Mountain Loop and Sycamore Cove Trail. If you are looking for a challenge, the Farlow Gap Trail is considered one of the most advanced bike trails in the forest.
- The perfect way to wind down after a day of outdoor recreation is at the Pisgah Inn. The historic property has been greeting guests since 1919, offering comfortable accommodations, delicious meals, and amazing views. We highly recommend making a reservation well in advance— the inn operates seasonally and is popular with locals and returning guests.
