Exploring Southwest Minnesota: Pipestone National Monument

Jun 18, 2021 | Midwest, General Travel

The national park system reaches every state, and the diversity and quality of the park units offer unforgettable experiences even when visiting the lesser-known sites. A historical treasure and true gem, Pipestone National Monument was established in 1937 to protect the sacred Pipestone Quarries. Today, there are 56 active quarries where the soft stone continues to be excavated and used by American Indians for pipemaking, as they have for over 3,000 years.

Travel Tip: The cool Midwestern small town of Pipestone is a great place to use as home base for your visit. While in town, take a tour of the downtown historic district and visit the Pipestone County Museum to learn more about Pipestone National Monument. On a warm day, head over to Split Rock Creek State Park for a swim in beautiful Split Rock Lake.

Things to Do

  • Start your day at the visitor center and watch the 22-minute orientation film. The indoor exhibits include 17 petroglyphs that were originally onsite and have been removed for preservation. From April through October, interact with the visiting Native American pipestone artists, some of which still quarry stone to carve crafts and pipes.
  • Attend a ranger-led program— the topics range from archeology and culture to night sky viewing.
  • Explore the national monument on the paved path that meanders through the Tallgrass Prairie. The three-quarter mile Circle Trail passes directly in front of Winnewissa Falls and the active quarries still used by Native Americans today. Keep an eye out for local wildlife— expect to see a variety of birds and small mammals.
  • The park is open year-round— starting on January 1, traverse the snow-covered trail on snowshoes and enjoy the peaceful winter landscapes.
