Virtual Roadtrip: Mammoth Cave National Park

The Largest Known Cave System In the World
The first stop on our Virtual U.S. Road Trip is Mammoth Cave National Park! Mammoth Cave is one of the 62 U.S. National Park sites and the only National Park in Kentucky. The cave system is extensive, with over 400 miles explored and mapped by professionals. The guided tours only cover a fraction of the 12 miles of navigable underground trails. Today, the most popular activities at the park are guided underground cave tours and exploring 70 miles of above-ground trails.
The handful of tours sell out quickly, making advance planning necessary, especially during the peak summer months. There are also free guided tours of the nature trails, or you can choose a trail and hike on your own.
Tour Tip: Bring a jacket and closed toed shoes, the temperature in the cave is a constant 54°F (12°C). Check the website to learn more about the cave tours and to purchase tickets in advance. Also, keep in mind that if you are traveling from the east, Mammoth Cave is in the Central Time Zone. You don’t want to show up an hour early for your tour!
Following the Connection
Mammoth Cave was a source for potassium nitrate, “saltpeter,” a major ingredient in high-quality black powder. There are still some remnants from the mining operation visible on your cave tour. The largest black powder factory in the world was owned by the du Pont Family. The family immigrated to Wilmington, Delaware, in the 1800’s and built a gunpowder mill that has been preserved and restored at the Hagley Museum & Library.

After your tour, don’t forget to visit the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village, and Toy Town Junction – all included with the Luray Caverns ticket.
