Virtual Roadtrip: The Historic Menger Hotel

The Oldest Continuously Operating Hotel West of the Mississippi
Stop #20 on our Virtual Road Trip is the Menger Hotel in Texas! The historic hotel in downtown San Antonio is located on the very spot the famous 1836 Battle of the Alamo took place. The hotel opened in 1859, built by a family of German immigrants who also operated the Menger Brewery (credited with bringing beer to San Antonio). At the time, San Antonio was a small town best known for being a stop on the Chisholm Trail. The hotel stood out as the best lodging option among the many boarding houses.
With a change of ownership, the hotel was improved with modern technology that included gas lighting and water in every room. The Menger Bar, a replica of the London House of Lords Pub, opened in 1887 with upscale mahogany tables and chairs, mirrors, fine crystal, and sterling silver. The hotel became a favorite among businessmen and celebrities.
The historic Menger Hotel is one of the crown jewels of San Antonio. The property allows you to take a step back in time without compromising on convenience and amenities. Today, the property includes 316 well-appointed rooms and suites, the Menger Bar, and the Victorian-era Colonial Room Restaurant.
Did You Know? The Menger Bar has been voted one of the top 10 Historic Bars in America and the Colonial Room Restaurant menu includes some of the classics dishes that were served by the original owners. The mango ice cream is a crowd favorite!
Travel Tip: The Victorian masterpiece is renowned for its architecture, museum quality mementos, and interesting history. The hotel is also located near two of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States – The Alamo and the San Antonio Riverwalk. When planning your trip, prices will vary based on time of year. Don’t hesitate to book outside of peak travel season— there is always something to do in San Antonio.
Following the Connection
Taverns, saloon, pubs, and breweries have always been an important part of our society. The Menger family was one of the early German immigrant success stories in America. The first brewery in the United States was D.G. Yuengling & Son in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. They opened back in 1829, but they are still offering tours and have 200 years of history to share with you during your visit.
